Covering Climate Camp

HOO, UNITED KINGDOM – 28.7.08. Kingsnorth power station Hoo, Kent, England on Monday 28th July 2008. Security is high at the E.ON coal-fired power station as an extra high-security fence with razor wire is constructed to protect the plant from the 2008 Camp for Climate Action. The camp is scheduled to be held from 3 to 11 August 2008 on land near the plant. At least 2,000 campaigners are expected to take part in mass action to shut down the power station via land, sea and air to protest at plans to build a new coal-fired plant on the site. Last year I covered the climate camp protests near Heathrow Airport and this year I will be covering the camp again.  The camp is scheduled to be held from 3 to 11 August 2008 on land near Kingsnorth Power Station in Hoo, Kent.  At least 2,000 campaigners are expected to take part in mass action to try and shut down the power station via “land, sea and air” to protest at plans to build a new coal-fired plant on the site.

An interesting debate on press freedom and privacy is taking place over at photorights and you can also read John Vidal’s (The Guardian’s environment editor) take on this issue from last year here.  My plan is to file images, blog and upload slideshows like I did last year.  Well that’s the plan and I will let you know how it goes.

An excellent, powerful and at time frighting article in The Guardian by Nick Davies on the bloody events at the G8 summit in Genoa in 2001.  Plus an interview with journalist Mark Covell, a victim of police violence at Genoa.   Well worth taking a look at and more so in the context that the G8 summit is back in Italy next year.

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM – 28.03.08. National Union of Journalist General Secretary, Jeremy Dear staging a one-man protest outside the Headquarters of the Metropolitan Police, New Scotland Yard, London, England on Friday 28th March 2008. The protest which was attended by press photographers from across of UK was in response to numerous complaints about how the police deal with the media, particularly at public events and demonstrations. Well done to The British Journal of Photography for picking up on the House of Loads debate on photography in public places last Wednesday (16th).  As the folks over at photorights.org.uk put it, “a few interesting points emerge from some pointed questions”.

On the issue of police surveillance of journalists, Jeremy Dear writes on his Blog, “Police surveillance of journalists who cover protests remains a live issue and on Monday I met with lawyers who are looking at ways we can challenge the harassment of individual members by the Forward Intelligence Team.”. It’s clear to me that this is about deliberate harassment of bona fide journalists and not about questioning the right of the police to use photography (or a note book for that matter) in a public place.  The issue is one of harassment and harassment alone.  The big question is why?  What is also interesting is as all of this is going on the Home Secretary Jacqui Smith is trying to uphold the police’s “right” to restrict photography in public places for the rest of us!

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM - 16.07.08. A mother and her son join fellow striking council workers in London, England on Wednesday 16 July 2008. Up to 600,000 workers took part in action across England, Wales and Northern Ireland over pay. The unions say rising prices in the cost of living make the employers’ pay offer of 2.45% effectively a wage cut, and demand a 6% pay increase.
