I’ve know the artist Stuart Sandford for something like five years and his a good friend.  Back then I called him the queer Terry Richardson and I still think that fits the bill today.

“While it may be tempting to dismiss queer British photographer Stuart Sandford as nothing more than another kid with a camera, a closer look finds that Sandford’s images successfully interlock the snapshot aesthetic with more thoughtful subjectivity. The result is a delicate, yet empowered portrayal that eschews piteousness in favor of a more light-hearted, exhilarating self”queerty.com

This is Marko Brozic, a model from Slovenia (who now lives in London) who has worked with Slava Mogutin & Brian KennyMarko likes to turn his own camera on himself to creative powerful and edgy self-portraits that have a beauty and frank honesty about them.  Within a narcissistic context these images show both the physical and emotional “self” but it’s our own voyeurism that we should take note of when looking at his work.

climate camp: the media strikes back!

This excellent article from John Vidal, (The Guardian’s environment editor) is well worth taking a look at.  He “lambasts” the heavy-handed media strategy of the Camp for Climate Action and makes some very good points and this is one of them:

“So it boiled down to this: the only people excluded were those journalists trying to be honest who could help them make their points to a wider public.  Anyone who wanted to write lies was facilitated.  Wow!  What a weird world that this new ‘movement’ has been born in.”

“Climate camp’s media mismanagment” – John Vidal, The Guardian.

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM – 18.08.07. Environmental activists invade and blockade the main UK warehouse of Carmel Agrexco (an Israeli fruit and vegetable importer) near Heathrow Airport on 18th August 2008.  Campaigners are calling for a halt to proposed expansion of London’s biggest airport and a reduction in carbon emissions from air travel. The media restrictions at the Camp for Climate Action (CCA) have been frustrating all week.  But yesterday a bit of media hour madness showed up on a direct action protest outside the camp.  This young woman (above pic) hit my lens and pushed my camera away all because I had not asked the young man with the D-lock around his neck (which was attached to one of the gates) if I could take his photo.  This group had just invaded a company called Carmel Agrexco (a fruit and vegetable importer) near Heathrow Airport and I’m being told off by one of them because I did not ask before taking a photo!  Freedom of the press anybody?

Just one pic from yesterday as all the action was taking place off camp and Newsnight had a good scoop the day before as well.  Tomorrow we are told (via press release) is the big day, we will have to wait and see. Waiting I think is going to be a big part of tomorrow.

Today I looked at life on and off the camp site and I have put up two sets of images.  The media hour worked a lot better today and I was able to go all over the camp site and my media guide was very helpful.  Working off the camp site and on Sipson Lane was very different as you will see from the images.

Rock and hard place – Climate Camp (post 3)

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM – 14.08.07.  Police confront a young man on the first “official” day of the Camp for Climate Action, Heathrow, London on 14th August 2007.  Environmental activists have occupied land north of Heathrow Airport and are calling for a halt to proposed expansion of London’s biggest airport and a reduction in carbon emissions from air travel. (Photo by Marc Vallée/marcvallee.co.uk) (c) Marc Vallée, 2007.

Last night we are told that “30 police officers” walked on to the Climate Camp site and that protesters “blocked” the police and “pushed them back” and that the police had to “withdraw”.  The Press Association reported this last night with quotes from inside the camp.

Why was this police action not better reported today?  Why did the broadcast crews not “go live” from the scene when this was taking place?  Why did my fellow photographers and I not have images of this?  The camps media restrictions of keeping the media off the camp site for 23 hours of the day is sadly the reason why.

I have spent the last 3 days reporting from outside the camp and only got to go in yesterday for the media hour tour which was on the whole a waste of time as it was all photo ops and set up’s and that is not photojournalism.  The important thing to take note of is that there would probably have been a photographer or two on site last night if the camp weren’t so unreceptive to the media.  I just do not understand why the camp does not want independent journalists in attendance.
